The Story Of Glenmorangie, The 'Unnecessarily Well Made'

After my first taste of Glenmorangie's finest whisky during the Orange Retro Funk Night event, I was keen to know more on Glenmorangie's 'Unnecessarily Well Made' story.

Although originally a brewery, the Glenmorangie distillery has been operating as a whisky distillery since 1843.

Glenmorangie is, quite simply, the most delicious and complex single malt whisky in the world.  Its multi-layered aromas and kaleidoscopic flavours stimulate the senses and entice the palate.

Now, what makes Glenmorangie’s whisky top notch perfect is the pride Glenmorangie takes in going to great lengths to ensure the quality of its product and also, to ascertain that Glenmorangie whisky is “Unnecessarily Well Made”.

How ‘Unnecessarily Well Made’ is Glenmorangie you asked?
Lets have a short tour shall we?

So, whisky experts would know that the casks used in maturation is very important and will determine the ‘make or break’ results of the whisky, especially the single malt whiskies.

Glenmorangie uses primarily ex-bourbon casks made from the finest, hand-selected American oak to impart more flavour. Many of Glenmorangie’s bespoke casks are made from white oaks slowly grown over 100 years and seasoned naturally in the open air for two years on the Ozark Mountains in Missouri, USA.

By seasoning the white oaks, they can be preserved in their porous texture – a quality that adds to the spirit’s intriguing depth. The casks are rested in low stone-built buildings with earthen floors, permeated by fresh sea-air, a gentle local climate ensuring a steady path to full maturity.

Moreover, Glenmorangie casks are only ever used twice to ensure the optimal amount of flavour is extracted into the whisky. Talk about strict quality control, ei?

Standing tall at dizzying height of 16 feet, ten and one quarter inches high

Using the elegant, swan necked stills that are the tallest in Scotland allowing only the lightest and purest of vapours to ascend and condense - Glenmorangie creates a fine line of distinctive complexity and layered flavour above other good single malt whiskies made in shorter stills.

Aside from the extra length gone in the exterior methods used to create the well made Glenmorangie whisky, the ‘interior’ is very much important as well.

Not forgetting the superiority of the ingredients, Glenmorangie uses the local spring water from its own Tarlogie spring and locally grown Scottish barley, combined with the skill of the craftsmen who follow the same, time honoured approach that the company has used throughout its long history. Hence, giving you the result of a smooth spirit of distinction.

Undeniably the most complex and perfectly balanced single malt, every sip of Glenmorangie offers a heady and alluring experience in taste, texture and aroma.

Now if this is not a whisky unnecessarily well made, I don’t know what is. ;)

Whether you are a single malt aficionado, a fan of contemporary design, or just plain curious, be sure to head to The Gardens to catch the SOUNDFORM Fluid, which is striking yet sculpturally functional illustration of Glenmorangie’s ‘Unnecessarily Well Made’ concept.

Happening from 11 April to 1 May 2012, Glenmorangie’s SOUNDFORM Fluid bar will be showcased in the North Atrium of The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley City.
